History

Château Phélan Ségur is a family estate created in the 19th century by Bernard Phélan, a remarkable Irish winemaker. After leaving his native lands, Bernard Phélan settled in Bordeaux. It was here that he married the daughter of a wine merchant with whom he built the Château which would later serve as a model for Médoc houses.

On the death of his father, Frank Phélan (son of Bernard) devoted himself to the notoriety of the family estate, that became « Phélan Ségur » at the beginning of the 20th century.

During two centuries of history there are 4 families who continuously worked to make the Château’s wines famous. Since January 2018, Philippe Van de Vyvere and his son Pierre are the proud owners of this estate.

Phélan is member of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux. La Place de Bordeaux includes Château Phélan Ségur in the category of Grands Crus Classés and Assimilés.

Viticulture

The 70 hectares of Château Phélan Ségur vines are situated not far from the Gironde estuary, in the Saint-Estèphe appellation.

The 2 grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are planted on a soil made of clayey gravel. Benefiting from a temperate climate with oceanic influences, as well as adequate drainage, the grape varieties can offer the purest expression of the terroir.

The young vines are divided into 4 plots which are cultivated sustainably. More precisely, all weedkillers are totally banned here. From the 1990s, biotechnology was used to stop all use of insecticides. The manure used to nourish the soil comes from organic compounds.

Vinification

Château Phélan Ségur 2017 is made with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot.

After manual harvesting, the winegrowing teams sort the berries. The first sorting takes place on vibrating tables and is carried out by hand. A second optical sorting is implemented since 2011.

Aging takes place in oak barrels for 14 to 18 months. The blendings are made right after this. The extraction is done by candle, according to the traditional method, gently and precisely. Michel Rolland, consulting oenologist, assists Fabrice Bacquey in the blending process.

The estate has a Grand Vin, “Château Phélan-Ségur” and two other wines: « Frank Phélan » and « Croix Bonis ».

The wines of Phélan-Ségur are vinified and produced with great respect for the terroir, which gives them the race, finesse, balance and typicality of a great Saint-Estèphe.
