History
In the tapestry of Napa Valley’s winemaking history, Opus One stands as a timeless masterpiece.
Established in 1979, this prestigious winery is the harmonious collaboration between two giants in the world of wine, Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux, France, and the visionary Robert Mondavi.
Their shared vision was to create a wine that seamlessly blended Old World tradition with the innovation of the New World, thus giving birth to Opus One, a wine that is both elegant and expressive.
Viticulture
Nestled in the heart of the Oakville AVA, Opus One’s estate vineyards are a testament to meticulous viticulture.
Far from their native lands, the Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec plants had to adapt.
The 69 hectares of very diversified terroirs are cultivated under an intense and brilliant sun, facing an expanse of mountains and vineyards as far as the eye can see. The terroir of Oakville, with its well-draining soils and optimal climate, imparts distinct characteristics to the grapes, setting the stage for the creation of exceptional blends.
Winemaking
Opus One’s winemaking philosophy is a delicate dance between tradition and innovation. The winemakers carefully select grapes from their estate vineyards, hand-harvesting them at the peak of ripeness.
The art of blending is central to Opus One’s winemaking process. Each varietal is vinified separately, allowing for the expression of its unique qualities. The final blend, a meticulous orchestration of flavors, showcases the best of Napa Valley’s terroir and the expertise of the winemaking team.
As for this specific vintage, we have a traditional approach with a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Petit Verdot 9%, Cabernet Franc 5%, Merlot 5%, and Malbec 1%. Aged 17,5 months in new French oak barrels.
Tasting
This wine has aromas of black fruits, rose petals, and earthy touches. The juicy entry offers a round, satiny mouthfeel with just enough acidity to complement its silky texture.
This seductive wine provides flavors of cassis, black cherry, and a hint of cocoa powder. The fine and soft tannins evolve towards a long and supple finish. Opus One 2019 will delight you now and for many years to come as it has an amazing aging potential.
Open 2 hours before serving and serve at 16-18°C, with red meat, white meat, game, mushrooms, and cheeses.
