History

The story of the champagne house R.Gerbaux is, above all, an imprint of the history and experience of the Gerbaux family, which began in 1920. The winery is located in the westernmost part of the Champagne region, in the very small village of Crouttes-sur-Marne.

Today, Juliette and Peter, representatives of the fourth generation of the Gerbaux family, produce champagne that highlights the terroir of the Marne Valley. On the family vineyard covering 10.7 hectares, three grape varieties are cultivated: 56% Pinot Meunier, 25% Chardonnay, and 19% Pinot Noir, allowing them to create rich and balanced wines.

Each generation has left its mark, creating its own champagne, each of which is associated with the passion and the knowledge of the terroir.

Viticulture

Champagne R.Gerbaux respects nature and works carefully its vines. They benefit from a continental climate, where frost is not uncommon. The average annual temperature is 10.5°C. The soils consist of marl and chalk.

Since starting work in the family estate in 2016, the Gerbaux family decided to focus more on soil cultivation and growing grass, limiting the use of herbicides and making viticulture even more qualitative.

The principles of working in the vineyards for this Champagne producer revolve around respect for nature and biological diversity, allowing them to obtain the best grape quality and create the finest wines.

Thanks to their principles and the tremendous work done, R.Gerbaux has received the HEV (High Environmental Value) level 3 certificate.

Winemaking

R.Gerbaux produces champagne only from grapes grown in its own vineyards. Every stage of cuvée production is carefully controlled. The producer’s know-how is a passion passed down from generation to generation.

As for the harvest, whole berries (without stems) are pressed separately, depending on the grape variety and the age of the vine. They are pressed using the high-quality Coquard press (the new version with an automatically tilting plate for perfect pressing). The settling tank with adjustable temperature is used for 24 hours at 14°C. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in stainless steel tanks on fine lees, with temperature control, as well as the initial maturation in tanks before bottling for 6-7 months.

Aged for 24-30 months.

Assemblage is done using wines from the current year (80%) and reserve wines (20%), partially aged in oak barrels. The aging in bottles on lees lasts for 4 years.

The blending of L’Empreinte de Raymond L’Authentique Extra Brut Champagne consists of 20% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, and 50% Meunier. Dosage: Extra Brut – 4,00 G/L.
